*mutters quietly about pure power not being the point of Thain*

The most famous (imo) PC archer on the isle is actually a Ranger build.

Yup, AC can be low, if the Ranger is not going to be using heavy armor (requires the investment in Heavy Armor feat). Note that a Ranger's FE ability still works in Heavy armor, as does spellcasting. I have seen some interesting Ranger builds that use heavy armor. A Ranger can sneak, however (light armor or none, of course). And he has some nice spells to help him do that - Camouflage and One with the Land. [ Edited 12:59:04 PM 06/25/07 ] [ Edited 01:00:35 PM 06/25/07 ]

An AA that is going to out melee a Ranger with his Animal Companion, at level 20? Post your build. I've done extensive builds with Rangers, and although you may be able to get a little bit better AB with your AA, it will not make enough difference to stave off a Full Ranger and his Animal Companion, especially if your AA is on the Ranger's FE list.

I'll PM you my build shortly, but suffice to say it would be a very strange ranger to have taken half-elf as a favored enemy in a level 20 build wink

Assuming they take a Sorcerer or Wizard level, an AA gains access to Protection from Alignment. That spell is individually better than anything on the ranger spell list. Rangers have a lot of versatility and a nice selection of RP tools. Arcane Archers, however, are more powerful characters. You don't need to waste time with melee or trickery when you can slaughter everything with ridiculous DPS that bypasses most counters. Also, SK is right. [ Edited 01:01:33 PM 06/25/07 ]

Rangers are not by class a front line defender/agressor. More of a strong supporting class for long range attack (which due to different arrows can cause a variety of problems for your enemy) So personally I do not see the need for heavy armour but then same could be said for my own bard.

I like the variety of different ideas and characters, not all will stay true to the stereotypes. Sometimes we need powerful characters to join a party to stand a chance.

Well, depends what you count as terrible. Wasp has effective AC of 31 with a bow and 35 in melee which isn't too shabby... I hope! smile

*is afraid of twirlips AA build*

weoll, i think we got side tracked, the point is, an ranger archer is a decent/good build in its own, even if some other might be better or not smile

Totally agreed. A level 20 ranger done right can make a very decent archer and also be very useful in lots of other ways. smile
