I have been meaning to post this for a while.
I am an avid mac user. As it stands, NWN2 will not be ported to the mac. In fact, discussion on the Bioware NWN2 forums about a mac/linux port is violently discouraged. There used to be a thread discussing the merits of Atari allowing a port, but even that thread seems to be deleted...a slap in the face to we who are mac users and have purchased Bioware products in the past. (personally I would kile to meet Rhomal in person so I can have a chance to do him bodily harm, even though he is but a lowly mod)

Anyway, the point of this thread is to find out what folks forsee as the future of Thain once NWN2 is released. Will the majority of folks who have invested years in Thain be sticking around? Will many folks be heading to the next big thing? What if the modules will be easily converted...and Thain is moved beyond the grasp of the mac/linux folks?
Your Thoughts?

I voted for option 4, just because I think the only chance I'll ever have to speak /33t is if somebody speaks it for me.
Thanks, NotDilinus, I can check that box now.
*goes to check "write in /33t at least once" off the list of things to do*

I plan to get NWN II when it comes out but hopefully, I would like to think that we will continue to play the first until a Thain module is constructed for the second... Which may take awhile.
I'd be very disappointed if it is not mac/linux usuable as I have always heard very happy results from people using linux to host on and it is a silly thing to do.
I'd say it is all abit circumspect at the moment, why cut a hole out of your market and upset your loyal ones?
I guess we can only wait and see.
Take care, Taniki
PS. Yes, sorry peeps... that mean you are still stuck with me for longer

Companies don't always do what they would like to do... in this case, some bean-counter has probably pointed to the sales volume for Windows vs non-Windows platforms and the cost to port to non-Windows platforms and said "If we want to ensure a profit, then you can't be doing these expensive ports to niche operating systems... we need to focus on our core market segment." Sounds bogusly familiar? *sighs*
P.S. I voted buy a PC.
P.P.S. Given my love of Thain, I'd be only too happy to buy NWN2 and continue immersing myself in the experiences of this community!

I wonder, when the poll here is "fully voted", how many of the Mac/Linux users voted they intended to buy a PC to run NWN2, as opposed to the number of current PC users who voted that they want the Mac/Linux users to buy PCs.

Probably the one where non-mac users urges mac users to invest in a PC That's how I understood that poll alternative at least. Maybe I should have taken it more seriously

I didn't vote because I see the release of NWN2 as being too far off to tell what will happen (although I don't really follow it's development). I'd never buy a computer to play a game, but if NWN2 comes out in 2 years, Apples will be running the majority of their machines on Intel chips (um, because it made sense for the iPod business--really). Even without a port, a Intel-based Mac will be able to run bad software via emmulation at speeds close enough that it won't matter unless you're involved in a FPS tournament. Of course, will I be investing in a Intel-based Mac when the pro machines become available? Not necessarily right away.
As well, I'm not overly worried about an immediate impact on Thain. I would expect that just like with the release of GW2 (or whatever the recent one was), there will be regular players who get distracted from Thain. But it will take a while to develop NWN2 PWs--I'm assuming that old NWN content won't be easy or necessarily even possible to port--and new NWN2 worlds won't have strong player bases for a while.

What I don't understand from a business standpoint is why you wouldn't simply pick a willing 3rd party (MacPlay, OpenKnights, etc...) who would wish to do the port and tell them to have at it? I am not overly versed on these things, but what would be the downside for Atari to allow a 3rd party to do the port for the niches?
Insofar as Thain is concerned perhaps I should ask the powers that be: Will anyone be left hosting/updating/DMing Thain within NWN (as it is now)?

From my very limited understanding of such matters, I assume a 3d party company would require too much payment for the job for it to be profitable. Just guessing based on what seems most logical here.

Unless Thain moves to NWN2, I'll probably be sticking around. But considering how far off it is, I might be absorbed in other games: BfME2, Quake 4, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.
