I agree with what Barnas said. PvP for me is so infrequent that I'd rather treat it on a case by case basis. There are some I'll PvP with, and some I won't.

I don't believe the intent of the OOC tell asking for PvP consent is to notify a caster IC to bring their buffs up. Not sure if this is what you meant.

I voted yes. I percieve "getting permission" prior to PvP more obtrusive and clunky than simply reading a discription for the disclaimer.

On the flip side, reading some people's 2,000-word essays in their descriptions takes away some of the discovery which is a large part of the enjoyment of RPing.

If I went through the planning prior to an attack, alerted the PC, and they suddenly began buffing up out of the blue I would be hiiiiiiighly torqued and would call the whole thing off in the name of cheese.

And you'd be quite right in letting a DM know that someone wasn't RPing respectfully too - their metagaming is lessening your fun.

Well, descriptions should neither contain OOC info nor knowledge that it's metagaming to have. So no 2,000-word backgrounds, just a physical description and how a character typically behaves is perfect in my book

agreed. I have to shake my head when I read someone's description that outlines every aspect of their character, but the character's actions don't reflect it a single bit. I have to wonder if they expect you to RP with their description or how they actually conduct themselves.

People never RP's from how people are describing their charakter. Atleast I'm not, because mostly the text doesn't fit with how they behave. I can't remember what I wrote on Rudoc Actually ... Something about wooden bracers ...

I prefer the descriptions stick to physical observables about a character; and even then I wish players could edit these themselves, since things often change.
Back on topic; I'd prefer not to grant automatic PvP permission, but if others wish to do so, isn't that their choice?
If a player creates a character with a **PvP is Ok** mark in his description, and someone attacks this character, has he grounds to object that he didn't give permission? I don't think so. However, I see no compelling reason to make it an obligatory staff supported standard.
