I know a ranger can, but how about a druid? I ask coz in game there's a quest that needs the PC to be able to communicate with animals, but only rangers can take this quest...

Druids are more fluent and much more capable with talking to animals. They have a much deeper and stronger connection with nature, it's creatures and lands.
Animal Empathy is the skill used to recognise this in nwn, when it comes to communicating with animals. There are DCs for each. Animals and Dire animals have DC 20+ animal's hit die. While beasts and magical beasts have 24+ hit die.
(those are against hostile creatures and if you fail against any creature for more than 5 they turn hostile.)
It is a nice little feat when used responsibly.
Rangers are less of nature's ward and more of a stalker/protector within their region. Often protecting (creatures and people) those who pass through their homeland. With a connection not as strong with nature, they rely more on their abilities than drawing on natural 'magics'.
Take care, Taniki
PS. Please, please, please be one of the first Druid's who seems to miss the part where living people are part of nature too.

You could always secure the assistance of a ranger or someone with animal empathy--you do not need to be a ranger yourself to complete the quest, if it's the low-level quest I'm thinking of.

I thought Druid and Rangers was capable of calming a animal ... Sounds strange to me that they can talk with the animal. First of animals doesn't really chat with eachother. Animals have a very speciall way of communicating between body language and speaking. I do not think you could actually have a real conversation with a wolf. Although, I do think, that druids and Rangers can calm animals. Make them hesitating in their attack.
My opinion is that it makes kinda crazy role play that Druid/rangers can talk to animals. Especially when I haven't found one single charakter on Thain that I think got the personality of a druid...
(I'm no D&D guy. So please excuse if I'm mistaken. But I've played on lots'a servers that has this rules and guidelines of how a Druid/ranger Can communicate with animals

fair enough. Perhaps they cannot directly talk to them. I see a Druid more capable of doing so than a ranger but how do you suggest they calm an animal?

It's something that I don't use often, but on onccassion, I RP my ranger communicating with animals, but I would not call it 'talking'.
As Dredoc said, it is more an understanding of an animals body language and a few sounds (not words), and an ability to use the same to 'reply.'
Things like numbers, direction, danger or safety, and some simple nouns that the creature would be familiar with could be communicated, I think. But I try to avoid using specifics. For example, an animal may know if 'two-feets' passed by, and how many, but they might not know if they were elves, or humans.
Most commonly, I use the skill for very simple communication rather than gathering information. Things like thanking an animal for its help, telling it to be patient or to stay, or asking permission to heal it. That sort of thing.

There's Sylvan, which d20srd.org describes as "the language of woodland creatures." That's what Nadya uses when 'talking' to animals.
I've always taken the term "animal empathy" literally though. That is, I agree with Dredoc and Vaedryan in that simple communication is possible but nothing really informative. It basically only helps to increase mutual understanding between druid and animal.
Though druids and rangers (and bards!) have a "Speak with Animals" spell described here which with to actually talk to them with too: -Clickedy-[ Edited 11:27:53 PM 08/27/05 ]
