I ran into Maggie near an area with starving wolves, obviously the mouse over tells the player more than they should know. Attacking would have been IC, but rather ridiculous imo(how would the character know?). If I recall I muttered something about an unusual specimen, faced her?, and slowly backed away, letting her decide how to take it from there. Made for an interesting encounter.

Animal empathy is generally just about understanding animals well enough to be able to know how to keep it calm. A little similar to how an experienced horse trainer tames wild horses by knowing enough about horses and their social traits to be able to make the horse feel comfortable. None of the skills are magical abilities (unlike feats) they are all just trained traits... not magical things like some feats are.
Animals aren't suddenly smarter because a druids near.. a druid maybe able to communicate with a bird... but a bird is still a low intelligence creature. So if a druid is commicating with a bear, it's not a case of asking it complicated philosophical questions about the world..the bear simply might not know the answers to a lot of questions.
