Randomly decided to check in after years and see talk of Doordie and Amel. Lots of fun memories! Arguably my first long time character, Narwyn, ended up closely aligned with Amel as his protege.
Doordie was one of the best RP's I ever played with. His stories, with his character Amel, were amazing. Rich, deep, complex. I hope Doordie is doing well! You have a really great Uncle!

Alright, I know that the principle purpose of Thain is to be able to sit around the Crossroads or Watch fires and discuss the latest fashion tips and lament the lack of availability of dyes because you'd, like, have to get up and go earn gold or, horror of horrors, go raiding to try and find them. And not to mention, actually getting up and doing something would cut horribly into the time available for writing stories of epic daring do that characters manage to accomplish despite the above.
But having said all that, I have a terrible admission to make. I quite like ad******ing. In fact it's the main reason I bother logging into Thain. It's just that although I can and do go off and ad******e on my own, (I know, such depravity should be banned), and that sometimes I can even drag along some innocent newbie who doesn't know any better, but I can't help feeling it would be even better if a bunch of consenting high levels went off and ad******ed together?
So, on the off chance that I'm not alone in this, I was just wondering if anyone else would admit to occasionally going off and testing their character against some of the harder dungeons, just for fun? If so, maybe they could get in touch and we could, like, go off and ad*****e together?

If you don't find enough like-minded people, I'd recommend trying to think of some hooks to others interested, as many probably won't want to go somewhere just to test their characters.
Part of the problem probably is that your Elf character is rather poor at communicating in Common, and "Want hunt gold?" is not really a good motivator for most characters.
If you come up with a motivation I imagine people will be a lot more interested. You'll also give people something to RP about on the trip.
This need not be at all hard. "The Elves need help, the Gnolls are pressing their attacks on the Feywood stronghold" or "A Slaad took my magic amulet, a reward for anyone who helps me find it!" or "A great monster was seen in the Wastes, who is brave enough to slay it?" I imagine things like that all work fine. And there need not be an actual stolen amulet or an actual special monster in the Wastes, you can just RP finding the amulet or not finding the monster or slaying a normally spawning monster.
(Pressing back Gnoll attacks is actually possible without DM help these days though thanks to the new scripts.)

As iguana said, really you need a simple hook. It could be something as simple as a need to go be sure some nefarious island threatening evil isn't SPREADING... That's actually as good a motivation as any if you can't think up others, because as always Evil is trying to gain a better foothold here.

Actually I think "Hunt gold?" should be a pretty good question to get the interest of what should be a bunch of adventurous types who earn their living by going off and removing loot from various bunches of creatures known to possess it. What I can't see as realistic is "I've lost my amulet in some really dangerous place and will a bunch of you drop everything you're doing or have planned to go traipsing off there on the off chance that I might find it again?"
I mean, I'd expect to be paying a good portion of the worth of the purported amulet just to get the interest of most adventuring types and even then I'm not sure I'd want to be broadcasting to all and sundry that there was a valuable item to be found in a specific place for any enterprising soul to go off and find. And why should a bunch of adventurers risk death or injury just because someone spotted something big and nasty somewhere a long way away? More likely a case of something and somewhere to remember to avoid unless the likely rewards are going to be huge. To put it simply, I can't see Alessan quitting the comfort of the fire without the prospect of a big payout and I think that would be the expected attitude of most such characters.
And as regards gnolls, have the gnolls suddenly had a makeover or something, because last time I checked they'd maybe be an interesting challenge for a couple of sub level 10s?

I think it comes from the idea of wanting "a story" to be a part of. "Hunt gold" is just like everyday work. We need the gold to buy supplies, housing what ever, but the chance to have our names in the books as felling the great evil (or good or monster) of the north plays on our egos.
And that is what needs to be played to for the adventurers (at least that I have seen). Play to their ego not their needs for everyday life.
So yes, while it makes sense in real life that they should want and need to go gather gold so that they can live and would want to avoid the great monster to preserve their life, adventurers are not everyday people.
If you are going to use a story that something was lost and needs to be recovered, then yes you should be willing to pay out more that it is worth in the recovery. But it can be said that this kind of event can get people going (I cannot count the times I have used it when I wanted to go to an area with others), you just have to be willing to give up something to get something. Whether that be payment for aid, or just a really good idea to go somewhere, people just want a reason.
Saying "hunt gold" to me, is just the same as saying "I want to dungeon crawl/grind, do you want to come?" And even IC my character(s) can think of easier ways to make gold.
All that said, if I have the time to go on an adventure then I am perfectly willing (in fact usually eager to) come along and help in some way or another. But I will admit there are times when I have finally been able to meet with a character IC and it does involve sitting and talking, so I will probably not come along.

That's fine and all, realism is a cool thing. But you've mentioned time and time again on the forums that you have trouble getting groups to adventure with you, and criticize their desire to talk about the weather instead of wanting to kill stuff with you. Now that you've been told what's that drives players to move their characters out of the CR, you may want to give it a shot instead of just going "this makes no sense". I'm sure you'll be more successful in finding a group.
I don't think about realism when I'm asked to come on a trip. I think of my personal enjoyment. Since a trip consisting of a repetition of "cool, I found loot" is not interesting to me, I favour trips which have a little story to them. I can come up with loads of reasons for my characters to come on trips which entail getting a lost amulet that are far from simple altruism, something which you find unrealistic. It may take some creativity, and sure, it may feel silly at times, but it sure is more interesting than killing stuff on my own.
