Randomly decided to check in after years and see talk of Doordie and Amel. Lots of fun memories! Arguably my first long time character, Narwyn, ended up closely aligned with Amel as his protege.

Doordie was one of the best RP's I ever played with. His stories, with his character Amel, were amazing. Rich, deep, complex. I hope Doordie is doing well! You have a really great Uncle!

Hi,

Is there an established version of the orc language that is used on Thain?

I did some web research on 'orcish' a few months ago trying to put something together for Greygor, and it appears there's no single language set for orcish in DnD, only versions off.

I finally put what I fount in a text file (attached) to use now and then for Greygor, but wondered if it conflicts with anything already in use.

These are the links I fount for reference, seem mostly based around Tolkiens blackspeech (I did have a couple more that discussed Blackspeech, but can't find them gah

whymedia

lugburz

I use the text file for easy referance, but its mostly from the first site, with some minor changes.

One thing, I don't know a lot about official DnD. All I do know is from the Bioware games and what I have researched online for the characters I create to play the games (never played paper DnD). So I am quite open to being told I'm well off base here.

On my old server, a friend of mine was an active half-orc player, creating his own guild and all that. Anyway, he compiled a list of words and such in Orcish, so I'll just copy it in here. If I remember correctly, some words dialected specifically for my old server. But still, there may be some useful info in there.

I saw a lot of that list being used on the EQ RP servers between 2000 and 2003 by both Orc and Troll players. (probably post '03, too, but I quit EQ then, so can't say) [ Edited 07:37:55 PM 11/25/08 ]

I model my orcs speaking orcish from a lot of the sounds in Warcraft. I don't use the exact Warcraft language, but I know some players have established what daboo and zug-zug mean.

Also, I'm curious to this... I've always played orcish as having no form of writing. "Orcish" writing would be primitive cave symbols, and not exactly something you could formulate into actual letters... more so images that tell a story. Thoughts on that?

That list you posted (HisInfernalMajesty) looks like what I based my orclist file on, from the first link whymedia (which in turn links to shadowclan.org). Maybe its the same group. I just removed some stuff that didnt seem to match Thain and changed a couple of things. From what I've read, after orcs first came to Faerun they gradually splintered off into to different tribes, so its likely orcish varies from land to land. As for writing, I did find this quote "Orc, which has no alphabet of its own, uses Dwarven script on the rare occasions when someone writes something down. Orc writing turns up most frequently in graffiti". Which fits your cave painting angle Miggen, and makes sense to me. As long as it doesn't contradict anything already in use on Thain, I'll keep on using it (and will add-in Zug-Zug wink). Just wasnt sure whether there was an 'established' orcish on Thain or what other players used. Edited PS. For me, its just add a little flavour now and then saying pre-prepared orc lines.. For the most part I would use the trusted "((Orcish)) Say what you want in english" as I simply couldnt translate it quick enough special [ Edited 11:18:39 PM 11/25/08 ]

Don't get me wrong, I don't make up my own language and start actually speaking it, I type words that sound like what I envision it to sound like. (Can you envision a sound? tongue)

Outside of the group with Zug-Zug and Daboo... lo'tar... the true meaning of Bag'norn, I wouldn't expect others to pick up on it. It's really something only played within the group.
