Randomly decided to check in after years and see talk of Doordie and Amel. Lots of fun memories! Arguably my first long time character, Narwyn, ended up closely aligned with Amel as his protege.
Doordie was one of the best RP's I ever played with. His stories, with his character Amel, were amazing. Rich, deep, complex. I hope Doordie is doing well! You have a really great Uncle!

i'm looking at creating a rogue based character (something more of a woodland scout, actually; traps and such) and i'm curious how much UMD is really needed to equip items.
If it is a lot, i probably wont bother dedicating points to it; it would be a useful way to up this characters' survivability, but i'm going to be somewhat strapped for skill points.
I'm thinking UMD could be worth it, but if i have to keep it capped at all times, im not sure that's in my budget.

Using UMD to equip things, is linked to the price of the items involved. It works on Thain the same way as in normal NWN's .. so it depends on what items you want to wear, as to how much you need [ Edited 01:35:01 AM 05/10/08 ]

my immediate reaction is this: if you want your character to be able to use magical devices, put points into UMD; if not, don't.
i know that sounds obvious, stupid, obtuse and facetious but i'm looking at it from an IC perspective. what is the character concept? screw the technicalities (for want of a better way to put it).
on the other hand, since you ask about the technicalities, here are technicalities.
still and all though .. character concept first, technicalities after. is what i think.

I've not played a UMD person before, but would you not be able to judge how many points you need as you level and see what equipment your person might like to wear?
Then each level after raising it a little you could look around the equipment you fancy and see if you have enough at that point .. if not you'll know at the next level up you will need another point maybe

it was actually a more generic question, ive never had a character (ever) with UMD. So it was a more general statement of "how many points does it take to be able to use worthwhile gear". I'm not too worried about it, i was just curious.

I believe Styvn has 10 base ranks in UMD, and he can use -almost- everything he's ever wanted to use on Thain.

A value of 17 or 18 (after considering modifiers) is probably high enough to use anything on Thain, and I'd bet that a 12 or 13 would work for the vast majority of gear.
