Echoing what Pwny says, generally you are free to explain what your character is doing however you wish. For example, I have an abandoned shifter I played that only used the Thain specific extra humanoid shapes, but he wasn't a shifter; he was a spy, and "shifting" was him using his disguises.
Saadow Leon was a psion, built as a sorcerer, using the spell effects but redescribing the visuals. Saadow was a superb RPer and characters like this really float my boat.
