Ok, I was going to post this on an actual stereo forum but I can't tell what those people are talking about.

My old stereo broke and would only power one speaker, so after much hemming and hawing, I bought a new one. A Denon AVR-S710W. I plugged it into the tv and into the speakers, and...nothing happened.

About ten minutes later while I was mashing the remote control buttons it started to show some signs of life on its internal LED screen, something like 'Start or cancel setup >>>>'. I mashed some more and waited. Ten minutes later it started playin a little ditty and displayed something like 'speakers engaging'. I pressed more buttons and it stopped doing that.

Now its just sitting there with a message 'calibrating speakers'. Its been like that for an hour or so.

The manual comes with a diagram showing you how to build an oragami rocketship, sit it on your couch (which really looks a lot like my couch) and attach a microphone to it. The front of the stereo has a jack named 'setup mic'. But the stereo didn't come with a microphone. (Just some sort of antenna thing with bare wire contacts like we used to use to attach to the screws on the back of the tv to pick up old Godzilla movies on channel 56. )

Is it understood (by everyone except me) that everyone who buys a stereo owns a calibration microphone to put into an origami rocketship on their couch?

Oh, my goodness. Remind me to never, ever, buy anything electronic ever again.

That being said, it sounds like you found the manual set-up option, which is likely very detailed to balance the output of the various speakers for your specific room shape. Look through your manual for a "Default" or "Automatic" set-up option, and that may be simpler.

As one who grew up before the Internet, I often look at physical paper manuals as well.

However, I would suggest you utilize Youtube (if you haven't already). You may (or may not) be surprised as to the sheer volume of content on there, especially when relating to fixing/setting up/breaking/repairing electronics, among other things. It can even show you a far simpler way to make that origami rocket ship, too!

My new life motto has become, 'When it doubt, Youtube it out'.

Oh yeah, absolutely. As I have bought several stereos in these past two-three years, I have enough origami rocket ships and UFOs to colonize not only the couch, but every single seating furniture in the room.

But seriously, YouTube it. If you can't YouTube how to calibrate like a pro, at least you can learn some pro tips about origami folding.

Also, never settle for simple audio equipment when you can opt for nothing less than Cain & Cain, and, I quote, sound to satisfy the soul: -Clickedy-

Bonus info: apparently you get a dog if you pre-order.

Wow, those speakers are perfect! They even come with a supertweeter, which I definitely need.

Ok, while I was assembling the origami rocketship I found the microphone. It looks more like a witches hat so I didn't recognize it ( I was looking for a black cylinder with a metal grating on one end like a sports announcer uses in a boxing ring).

The stereo seems happy now setting itself up. I'm gonna leave it alone for a while tilll it gets accustomed to the room.

The advert on Amazon even shows the "witches hat" microphone. The Denon rcvr is a nice looking component. Detailed online (-Clickedy- and downloadable manuals. Looks like a good choice.

I like how Cain comes to the Thain forums and IG tells to ask for technical advice. We've dsicussed his stereo receiver dilemma for a while. There's been discussions on staining furniture, home secruity and acedemic life. I've also been queried on removing possums from one's attic, eradicating fire ant nests from the back yard, keeping outdoor fauna outdoors along with other aspects of life in the deep south (I live north of the Mason-Dixon Line, btw). He knows we Thainitics are expert on all topics, So, no question or problem is beyond our capabilities to resolve.

Agreed.

Update. The stereo had me running around the room reconfiguring the speakers. Eventually it was ok with how they were wired and where I put them (I even stacked up pillows on the back wall to dampen the echo). Then it wanted internet, so i hooked it up and gave it a login name. Then, apparently, it logged on so it could play some recordings from a Dick Tracey archive, which I turned off in attempts to get it to play the sound from the tv, which it refuses to do.

I think its still pouting about the Dick Tracey thing.
