Randomly decided to check in after years and see talk of Doordie and Amel. Lots of fun memories! Arguably my first long time character, Narwyn, ended up closely aligned with Amel as his protege.

Doordie was one of the best RP's I ever played with. His stories, with his character Amel, were amazing. Rich, deep, complex. I hope Doordie is doing well! You have a really great Uncle!

I was very excited about this movie. The previews kept it somewhat mysterious as to what it was actually about (not surprising with a M Night Shyamalan movie) and it had a few shots that gave me the cringies.

I went to see it the other night and was overall not very impressed. Perhaps it was due to the fact that I couldn't get into the atmosphere of the film due to my gaggle of snarky comment making companions, but our annoying comments are usually quelled by a compelling plotline. To start off the script wasn't very good, there were random lines thrown into it that didn't make any sense and the characters seemed a bit too simple. The acting also suffered a lot, but it could've contributed greatly from the script.

The overall idea of the movie has potential to be frightening (I think M Night Shyamalan is an amazing person, he just needs to find a way to bring his ideas in a little better) but due to the setup it seems almost laughable. The twist at the end is you paid nine dollars to see this movie when you could've sat at home and read a nice book (or played Thain).

I believe M Night Shyamalan has a very distinct style that is decidedly his own. Personally, I often prefer films that are not carbon copies of the formulaic Hollywood blockbuster. I like films that do not have...

Character Development to the point of attachment

followed by...

Crisis

followed by...

Challenge

followed by resolution of the crisis by the protagonist(s).

Certainly we have all seen them. And certainly there are elements of these things in The Happening. But it is told in a different way.

To me, it feels more organic, less manufactured.

A solution to the crisis is not spelled out for the viewer as is so commonly done in Hollywood. The viewer is forced to ride along with events filled with uncertainty, unlike the typical "good guys are gonna win, just sit back and enjoy the explosions" Hollywood film.

I gave it 7.5 Stars out of 10 and considered it worth the money I spent.

Just another perspective.
