Randomly decided to check in after years and see talk of Doordie and Amel. Lots of fun memories! Arguably my first long time character, Narwyn, ended up closely aligned with Amel as his protege.

Doordie was one of the best RP's I ever played with. His stories, with his character Amel, were amazing. Rich, deep, complex. I hope Doordie is doing well! You have a really great Uncle!

Based on some discussion in another thread (whose posts I have moved here) I thought I'd start a specific thread for this. I've done a lot of gameplay-testing of different mechanics over the last 13 years I've played on Thain, and I, along with a few other particularly mechanically savvy individuals who I'm volunteering without telling them (<3 you Amber, Corlupi, PFWG, etc.) certainly don't mind answering any questions you might have.

That's a shame. ..lol

Oh well, now to decide between Ice Storm and Evard's Black tentacles.

Thanks for the reply, Shards.

Depends entirely on what you're doing.

For group play, Evard's Black Tentacles is not only incredibly boring for the rest of your party (in my opinion), but due to the mechanics of NwN, all of the monsters will come rushing at you, due to the sheer number of saves being made. If facing paralyze-immune monsters, it's almost guaranteed your target will make at least one of the many, many saves, and change focus to you.

Ice Storm has no save, and therefore, your tanky dwarves and melee PCs will maintain the monster's focus.

So the saves draw aggro (is it called aggro in NWN ?) on the caster ? I always thought it was direct damage.

Does it tend to make it boring for some groups due to the sheer power of the spell ending the fights too early, or just because the monsters don't fight back when paralyzed ? I usually see players of rogues liking anything that allows sneak attacks, but it may be different for fighters and other tanks.

Correct! A successful save against a spell/effect will cause an enemy NPC to change focus to you. A failed save will not.

And I may be in the minority, but I like at least a LITTLE challenge in my baddies. wink Some people may prefer to have everything paralyzed all the time.

Also, Doggy B: you just blew my mind. Are you about to say I should be stacking up on min save AoE stuff on my tanks to guarantee aggro?

Grease is one of the best tanking spells in the game. Forces a save every round. If they succeed, they focus you. If they fail, they fall down next to you.

And there's a reason I put Dirge on the DwD ring.

I guess this explains why a summon runs towards a spell caster when they are in an AOE spell, even after the caster is dead..? Stupid brainless summons.
