Handbook of Summons


There are several very useful threads posted in various places on these forums to provide some guidance on how to customize and interact with summons. Two of the most helpful might be the summons appearance list, which provides all of the possible reskin forms for summons, and the player-run event thread, which gives tips on how to further customize your summons (rename them, resize them, add wings, or add VFX), stage them, and have them interact with the world (through /tk commands). This thread will not repeat any of that information.

This thread is intended to give details related to the statistics and abilities of all of the summons available through Thain modifications. Those statistics and abilities are not effected by changing summons skins or scale (e.g., if you reskin your summoned kobold to look like an elder dragon, it will still only have a strength of 10 and 28 hit points). So what, exactly, are all of the base summons, and how do you select them? That’s what we’ll cover here for Summon Creature I to IX spells.

For set decorating, if you want a reskinned summon to be armed with a particular sort of weapon, then it will be important to know what weapons the available summons have. Reskinning a summons does not alter its equipment, so a reskinned summon able to appear with a weapon in its hand (e.g. a humanoid rather than an ooze skin) will appear with the same weapon that its underlying summons came equipped with.


Toggling Summons Type
On Thain, there are four types of summons you can call on through each of the Summon Creature I to IX spells: primary summons (those from stock NWN), secondary summons, tertiary summons, and undead summons. You choose between them by typing the /summons and /undead commands into the chat window.

Typing /summons into the chat window will toggle from primary to secondary, from secondary to tertiary, or from tertiary back to primary. Feedback as to which summons type you have toggled into is displayed in the server window (the same window where you see all the combat details).

If you type /undead, and have spell focus necromancy as a feat, you set your summons type to the undead forms. Your summons type remains on undead forms even if you type /summons into the chat window and receive feedback that your summons type has changed to secondary forms (for example). To access one of the other summons again, you have to re-type /undead into the chat window. (So, if you're expecting to summon an emerald golem, and you end up with a wight, you probably need to type /undead into the chat window).



Summons Boosting Feats
Each summons can be made stronger through temporary* hit points if you have spell focus: conjuration, or greater spell focus: conjuration. Each adds an additional 25% to summoned creatures’ hit points for all primary, secondary, and tertiary forms (so a total 50% increase with the greater spell focus feat). The exception are the undead forms. These require spell focus: necromancy to summon, and both spell focus: necromancy and greater spell focus: necromancy each then add the incremental 25% to undead summons' hit points (so 50% in total with the greater spell focus feat).

* Temporary hit points are gone once lost; the creature can only be healed back to their base total hit points, not to their total with the temporary hit points.
