I agree about the absurdity of conversations that last two days and two nights. but in terms of age - especially long-term characters - passage of time throws up interesting questions.

Yeah, it's all subjective and based on the story being told.

This is the way.

I prefer to use real-time, myself! I don't imagine any of my characters have really had 4 day conversations, for instance.

It should be noted though that time is a nebulous concept at best on Thain. The answer to any question about how much time has passed between two events is always "however much time is most interesting for the story".

@Kyssyt,
I did the math on that about 10 years ago, and if it hasn't changed, 1 year RL is equal to about 30 years game time on Thain. So, 12 years RL would be about 360 years on Thain.

Kyssyt

What's 12 RL years in Thain years?

**OOC Note: This plot is taking place within the context of the Red Wizard posts in Southern Expansion:

-Clickedy-

Some days it was hardly worth getting out of the bathtub. There was little fun in life, lately -- her beloved Gerbo was gone. All the hin seemed to have disapeared, or only came around so infrequently that they might as well have all gone to the moon. Thain was rapidly becoming a very boring and monochrome place, indeed; all those silly people huddled around campfires talking of nonsense, and not a decent cocktail lounge for miles! Tanna couldn't even take pleasure in her music anymore. She was just going through the motions, devoid of purpose. There was little joy in life anymore. Perhaps it was time to move on to greener pastures?

And she would have. Had it not been for the Very.Strange.Man.

He wasn't much to look at, really. But he was rather enthusiastic and earnest in the way of an excited puppy. It was all boundless eneergy and enthusiasm, little sense. Diego, he called himself. At first, he was all "I've been sent" this and "I've been sent" that, puffed up with some sort of importance derived from "having been sent", she guessed. Eventually, between the 'they didn't tell me that's' and the 'I only know what they told me's', the entire story was gotten out of him.

Someone (just whom, he did not know. In fact, he was quite confused about much) "back home" had decided that "not enough" was "being done" on Thain. It was like pulling teeth to get more than this initially-sketchy sort of information from Diego, almost one, agonizingly-slow syllable at a time, but eventually it became clear; The Harpers back on the mainland had not heard much from their brethren on Thain, and were worried. So worried that they sent Diego, with little more than a sketch of Tanna -- and no clear idea of what he was to accomplish. Did he come to make a report? Did he come to prod folk into action? No; he was supposed to "find out what was happening". When asked very specific questions about how he intended to go about this mission, Diego himself could do little more than shrug.

"Ah," Tanna thought to herself "someone back in the Herald's Holdfast must be bored, and has found a loose thread to obsessively pull at." There could be no other explanation for the apparently haphazard and frivolous manner of Diego's appearance, and the vagueries of his "mission". That he'd even managed to find her was in itself a small miracle, given the woeful state of preparedness he'd been sent forth in. He was simply set on a ship with a sketch and told 'to look'.

Well, so long as he was here, she might as well make use of him. The question was how?

Rumors are like flies; a cloud of them always appears at the first hint of something rotten, and this was both a signal and a warning sign; something's happening --- and the source might really stink.

And so it was with this one.

The Red Weenies of Thay were going to sell their Trading Post in Raven's Watch. The word was out, yet in such a way that almost made one think they had wanted to keep such a thing a secret.

Now, why would they do that after having gone to a great deal of trouble to establish it? The answer had to lie in all that construction in the south! Had to be; it must have been devouring gold in huge quantities, by the hour. For years, Tanna had dreamed of a way of striking a blow at the Red Wizards, but hadn't quite seen a way to do something which which might actually annoy, let alone potentially hurt them. Now that a potential-weakness should suddenly presents itself, was too good an opportunity for mischief to pass up.

Tanna was begining to think of ways in which to exploit this weakness, when it suddenly struck her -- Diego shows up and the next thing you know, an opportunity appears to strike a blow for freedom and decency. Coincidence? Or did that thread puller back in the Holdfast have some sort of vision? Serendipity? Possibilities began to swirl in her head; yes, this just might be the sort of thing that was needed, a happy coincidence of events that might lead to something substantial -- if it could be done properly. That was the trick. The thing would need to be thoroughly planned.

The first step would be a disguise of some sort. One should never conspire in plain view.

The transformation was complete. Simple black robe. A hood. A sufficiently-threatening trident.

Limp. Hunchback. Croaking voice. It all came so easily. All those years on stage, learning the craft of the actress; it all came together to create Zora of Darkhold.

Other identities would need to be created, as necessary. But for now, Zora would do. Zora was simply the wedge.

Stage One of Operation Fuzzy Bunnies was now in Effect!

The disguises and cover story had been concocted. Tanna and Diego began moving about Thain disguised as a pair of Zhentarim, Zora of Darkhold and her manservant, Laren. They asked questions, they got few answers. The sale was not general knowledge, it seemed, and the location of any Red Wizard of authority was a mystery to most beyond "try the Enclave". Gold was gven to several idle adventurers around the Crossroad's Campfire; spread the word, two people, a man and an old, feeble woman, were looking for some Thayan with authority. They wish to discuss business."

The response was almost immediate.

Tanna and Diego met three of the higher-ranking Red Nosepickers right outside the Trade and Tackel. They weren't even interested in negotiating. They simply named a price. No matter, they could have whatever price they demanded, at the moment, this was not important.

They asked some pointed questions. They wanted to know why the Zhentarim would send Zora to negotiate a business deal, but not send one of the resident Zhents. They wanted to make enquiries of their own, and confirm certain things, before the deal would be consummated. Fair enough; why shouldn't they be suspicious? Tanna and Diego would just have to ensure that they found what they expected to find; that there was indeed a Zhentarim mission, and true to form, it had neglected to tell it's brethren. Just another episode of Zhentarim distrust and inefficiency sowing confusion in the ranks.A

The first stage was complete: the price had been agreed upon, almost with indecent haste. All that remained was to arrange a date on which to make the 'payment'. Tanna/Zora told the Thayans that she would "have to speak to her superiors", but she foresaw no major obstacles to completing the deal. When "payment" was approved, they would meet again.

Stage two of operation fuuzy bunnies!

When Diego first came here, he wasn't sure of anything. he wasn't sure he could find Tanna Nightsong, or if he can do what he came here to do. He couldn't disclose a lot of information regarding his arrival. He wished that he wouldn't have to keep so much of his past secret, but it comes with the field...

However, things are turning out to be quite good. He is glad Tanna has agreed to help. In fact, she did a lot more than help. He couldn't help but admire her initiative. she seems to be quite capable.

Diego's mission was quite simple. He needed to talk to someone named Sophia, who is supposedly rather learned in alchemy and the such. we needed a two-stage explosive. an explosive that consists of two different things, harmless when separated, but when put together are.... well, explosive.

Sophia was quite rigid with dealing with strangers, which I suppose is a good thing. We found a private spot, and began discussing it. she was.... quite a persuasive negotiator...

an advance was given, and things were set in motion.

Stage Three had begun.

Tanna disguised herself as Alanna, the Traveling Merchant, and slipped in to see the Smiths of Hammersong. This was one of the more crucial aspects of the mission, and it required a high level of precision and craftsmanship.

Gold bars must be cast. This in and of itself was not difficult, but the specifications were quite...unusual.

For some would need to be hollow. The hollow space within would be sheathed in lead to prevent magical scrying, and yet, the hollow space must be accessable and yet well-hidden from ordinary view. These hollow bars must not deviate in weight from the others, so as to not indicate they were anything but solid gold. If the dwarves of Hammersong could not do this, then who could?

She made inquires, and was told to see the dwarf they called Blazehart, the Master Smith of Hammersong. The negotiations were polite, but it was obvious that the dwarf was indeed very curious. To allay his suspicions, Tanna/Alanna flashed him the badge of Steinkreis that Lord Lumpypants had given her so long ago. Drawing the dwarf to her conspiratorily, she lied; she told him that she was working on some hush-hush mission for her Lord Kampfer. The dwarf was evidently pleased to and flattered to have been taken into confidence in this manner, and he swore to say nothing.

She gave him 30 pounds of gold. She would return in a week to see what he could fashion with it.

Diego was again disguised, this time by a commoner named Sil. He went to Keane's metal shop in Hamley and asked him if he would make him something. sure, he was curious, but after seeing "Sil's" quiet manner, he stopped asking questions. besides, his request was quite innocent, although unusual.

all "Sil" needed was a box. a simple box with a mechanism inside that could either release a material or light a fire. "Sil" made sure he he paid Keane well to ensure his discreetness, and of course, good craftsmanship.

Things were rapidly falling into place. Soon, the trap would be sprung and those mean, old wizards would finally pay a price for all that they had done. It would be a small thing, in the grand scheme, but it would be something. It would be a blow for freedom and justice, and a tangible sign that the long-suffering people of Thain had real, if anonymous, champions.

There were just a few loose ends to tie up. Tanna set out to tie one of them this day. She slipped into her persona of Zora of Darkhold, and went to see Krell, the scum-sucking leach who controlled Raven's Watch. His greed would be turned against them all, she hoped, and provide a shield behind which the plan could come to fruition. Tanna walked into Krell's home, and demanded to see the Lord and Master.

"Lord Krell", she started, "I am Zora of Darkhold, come to you to discuss a lucrative business propostion..."

Tanna could see that his eyes were already wide, and a hint of drool appeared at the corner of his mouth before he even heard the proposal. She told him that the Zhentarim would like to ship the Black Lotus, a potent narcotic, to Thain from their farms in Tethyr. And that Zora had been sent to buy the Thayan trading post, and negotiate landing rights for this express purpose. Naturally, this was a secret operation; so secret that the powers that were in Zhentil Keep had found it necessary to not even tell their operatives on the island. The potential fror profit was too high, the need for security, too great.

Which is why she had come to see Krell; security...and to negotiate a means of distribution. Zora was authorized to offer 15% of profits to Krell in exchange for security, and access to his caravans and shipping routes. Eventually, when the distribution system had been established, and product was flowing freely, she could offer 25% of the profit. Krell would be wealthy beyond his most avaricious dreams! He could bathe in gold, if he wanted to.

The old kingpin was crafty, though. He declined to answer right away, and preferred to think upon the offer, generous though it was. He would not answer now, but might soon....very soon.

A complication.

Truly, it wasn't unexpected. Sarletta may have been wicked, evil and poorly-dressed, but she was not stupid. One must give her credit for that much, at least. She had wanted to confirm Zora's 'identity', and so she merely whispered a few words in the right ears. But Tanna never expected *these* ears.

Tanna had, naturally, assumed Sarletta would just ask the Zhantraim to verify things for her. She had, in fact, asked that fool Taron to do just that. However, she must not have been satisfied with the answers she got (if she had gotten any; Tanna and Diego had been extremely careful), because she went to a third source for her confirmation. They called themselves the Order of the Ebon Flame, and there was apparently some friction between them and the Zhentarim faction. Perhaps something to be filed away for future reference?

This Ebon Flame was not exactly subtle; they had been conducting a very public search for Zora for a week, at least, and so Tanna let them find her. The meeting took place in the basement of the Trade, and it all revolved around a single subject: verify your identity, Zora of Darkhold, or we'll kill you...eventually. Someday. Tanna had the impression that while these folks were, indeed, serious, they seemed to lack a work ethic. Even their threats were rather tame, but Tanna attributed that to their desire to be seen as reasonable people...as if reasonable people followed dark gods and wore matching uniforms of questionable taste.

There were three of them: Vyranna, Jesse and another who kept quiet and did not introduce himself. The conversation was almost enough to put one to sleep, tedious recitations of complaints between the two factions, history of this order and that, blahblahblahblahblah. They needed to get to the important part: could Tanna convince them to vouch for her with Sarletta?

A letter was produced, a cunning forgery from Tanna's own hand, and produced for Vyranna to read. She was convinced...just enough. She would vouchsafe for Zora in her dealings with Thay. The final piece fell into place. All that remained was to assemble the 'surprise' and get it into Thayan hands.
