What does it mean to respect your fellow players?
  • Thain is a Roleplay server that caters to a wide variety of playstyles and ages. As such, we require that RP be kept within a PG-13 rating. Things not allowed on Thain include, but are not limited to: graphic sexual content, excessive violence/gore, racial/homophobic/religious insults, etc.
  • Reference to Rape or other sexual assault is prohibited in roleplay, even in 'fade to black' moments or in a character's backstory.
  • Griefing ( is not allowed on Thain. Griefing comes in many forms, but in general if you are deemed to be logging in primarily to ruin others’ fun, you will be removed from the game world.
  • No Metagaming. Metagaming is using out of game knowledge that your character wouldn't have access to such as the contents of an in character post to something learned on another character. It can also be using an OOC bias to react in game. Characters should speak and behave according to their personalities and motivations, not those of the person playing them.
  • All non-mechanical consequences between players are by mutual consent. Examples might be a curse, loss of limb, or permanent death.

AoE/Summon Rules:

The command /releasesummon allows you to leave a summon in the server that will follow a faction setting as you specify. The following rules apply to such summons:

No Transition Ambushes - Please avoid dropping hostile NPCs, damaging AoE spells, or feyfire wards right on top of area transitions in such a way that they will instantly attack or harm players moving through the transition. This can easily lead to players being killed or debuffed before they load in and have a chance to control their character or react. An AoE around the transition (such that you have to walk a few steps to be actually in it) is fine, as are hostile monsters at the edge of perception range. A non-damaging AoE like Darkness is probably also fine. Since targeting isn't always perfect, if you find that one of your released summons or AoEs is on a transition, please use the /endaoe or /destroysummon commands to clean it up.

Signpost your Encounters - Using /releasesummon to set up guardposts or spice up existing areas with new encounters is generally okay, but please bear in mind that your summons can target people you don't intend, and they may kill players who are just trying to get from one place to another. The respect rule applies here. If you are releasing hostile summons that would greatly increase an area's difficulty, use the Signpost or You See placeables to provide ample warning!

Put up warning placeables or weaker encounters that lead into stronger ones. If you're setting up a tough encounter for a specific group, don't be afraid to signpost it with OOC placeables if you think there is a chance someone else might walk in. Don't leave large groups of powerful summons on the common roads unattended. If you feel like an ambush you've created would be dangerous once left alone, clean it up with /destroysummon before you leave.

Be mindful of lag - Areas with persistent AoE effects (ie: mist, fog, etc.,) or areas with many NPCs can be very laggy on some player's PCs. A few extra summons there are probably fine, but try not to clog such areas, especially if the server is busy. Use good judgment on this!

Non-Mechanically-Supported Powers

The Thain staff has been reluctant to comment on which edition of DnD Thain “exists” within, largely because we have players with wide varieties of experience in everything from ADnD to DnD 5E. Due to mechanical limits within the game engine, some familiar spells from various editions (Wards, sending spells, etc.) are simply unworkable within the confines of NWN. While it is ok to use creativity to add flavor to your character by drawing inspiration from abilities such as the ones mentioned above (within reason), bear in mind that anything that is not mechanically supported by the game engine must be consented to by all players who may come across it.

Some examples:
  • A warded door can be a great RP tool, but bear in mind that players are under no obligation to self-impose damage, ability penalties, crossing it. If you want to mechanically do such, use a glyph of warding or a feyfire ward.
  • Spells of sending should be used sparingly, bearing in mind that they carry huge mechanical advantages which are hard to balance around. There is a fine line between a “spell of sending” for RP purposes and simply giving a character information in an OOC manner via a tell.
  • In general, use common sense here. Just because you should “theoretically” be able to do something, doesn’t mean it makes for an interesting character trait or a good story.

Some players on Thain will make use of the various tools available to create their own stories and events. We encourage this! Taking part in these events may involve accepting certain premises - for example, a player might use Invisibility to hide themselves while controlling NPCs or summons to tell a story. A player running such an event may impose special restrictions or threats, by consent, which are not mechanically supported by the rules. While you are not required to take part in any player event, if you attend and take part, it is expected you will be accepting of the general premise. If you are concerned about a player event imposing too much on the people around, feel free to bring it to the Staff.
