Though they weren't ubiquitous for a long while, glasses, in at least some form, date back to at least the 13th century.

As for shades, some varieties of gems would probably do the trick. Smoky quartz in particular comes to mind.

In any event, Thain is what I'd call an "anachronism stew". We have lords, feudal holdings, wizards, dragons, elves, dwarves, and robots!
